How do we clean rugs?

Once booked, we will send our fully qualified fabric cleaning specialist to undertake the cleaning. Upon arrival, the technician inspects the fabric of the rug and, if needed, conducts a fibre identification test. They may also measure the pH of the rug’s fabric to decide which chemicals will be best for the cleaning. The technician will also inspect the fabric for damage, scuffs, marks, particular stains, and colour fastness (also known as colour bleeding).

Depending on the condition and type of fibres present in your rug, the technician will have four options:

  • dry cleaning,
  • foam cleaning,
  • cold water extraction cleaning and
  • deep steam/water extraction cleaning.

Dry cleaning

Dry cleaning can be done on any type of rug; however, it is compulsory for certain silk variants, sisal, seagrass, jute, coir, viscose, and plant fibre or pulp-based rugs.

Some rugs can only be dry cleaned, which means they can only be cleaned with a dry cleaning compound or powder. Liquids spilled on these types of rugs can be absorbed by their fibres, permanently damaging the rug.

In cases such as this, our technician will make you aware that the rug is dry-clean only and identify any stains that may not be fully removable due to fibre damage.

If there are no stains, or if you agree to have the rug cleaned despite the existing damage, the technician will use a dry powder that is then agitated into the rug’s fibres. The powder will absorb any dirt, allergens, and bacteria from the rug’s fibres.

The technician then professionally hoovers the rug to extract the powder and any dirt residue.

Note that the dry cleaning method is the original or initial method for cleaning fabrics. This method is not designed for stain removal and is used for hygienic cleaning.

Specialist foam cleaning

Special fabrics such as velvet, viscose (rayon), silk, and velour, among others, require delicate, specialist cleaning. The use of liquids can damage such fabrics, so we clean them with a foam compound for safer and better results. We use specialist chemicals, which quickly turn to foam when agitated during the application process. The foam attracts dirt, allergens, and bacteria from the fibres, which are then extracted from the fabric shortly afterwards.

It is important to note that foam cleaning is a relatively new and time-consuming procedure and requires a thorough assessment of the fabric before application. Please email us with photos of the items so our team can assess the feasibility of cleaning them prior to booking the service.

Woolsafe-approved / cold water extraction cleaning

Some rugs, particularly those made of wool, linen, or a mix of these two fibres, can either be dry cleaned or cold water extraction cleaned. The advantage of cold water extraction is the more effective removal of spots and stains.

Cold water extraction uses water (up to 30 degrees Celsius) with Woolsafe-approved chemicals. They are added to the cleaning machine’s tank, which then injects them into the rug’s fibres. The water, along with the chemicals and all the dirt, bacteria, larvae, and allergens, is then vacuumed out of the rug’s fabric.

It’s important to note that at 30 degrees, some bacteria and allergens may be removed by the cold water extraction process, but these fabrics are likely to be damaged if a higher temperature is used, so this process is effective on specific bacteria and allergens.

Also, wool and linen rugs present particular problems:

Firstly, wool attracts moths, so there could be existing physical damage on the rug’s fabric. Such damage needs to be repaired, not cleaned. If you are familiar with such areas on the rug, please make the technician aware of them; in turn, if the technician identifies such issues on the rug, he will make you aware of them.

Secondly, there might be some colour running from the rug’s fabric, especially if it has been home-dyed. If so, the technician will do a colour fastness test before cleaning the rug to help avoid such issues.

Hot water / deep steam cleaning

This is the most effective cleaning method available today. The technician will use a wide range of chemicals, along with boiling water in the machine’s tank. The machine will inject water and chemicals into the fibres of the rug, and it will immediately rinse it out afterwards, along with the dirt, allergens, and bacteria.

The use of steam and the wand attachment on the vacuum are what make this deep steam cleaning successful.

Hot water extraction method can be used on cotton and on any synthetic or artificial fibre.

We suggest that you share clear photos of the rug and any labels during the scheduling process to help us identify the fabric and advise which cleaning method will best suit your rug. Send your photos and inquiries to contact@londoncarpetcleaningltd.co.uk.
