With the festive season around the corner, you must be busy preparing your home for family gatherings and celebrations. Your upholstered furniture, being the centrepiece of your home decor, will certainly require some extra attention.

In this blog, we will discuss how to safely clean a white upholstery before the celebrations to elevate the look of your space and provide spotless and comfortable upholstery to your guests.

5 Easy Steps to Clean White Upholstery

1. Remove Covers & Vacuum The Upholstery

Remove the upholstery covers and start the process with thorough vacuuming. You can machine wash the covers as per their cleaning instructions. Use the upholstery attachment and vacuum all the areas, including under the cushions. Vacuuming will remove the loose dirt, dust, and debris from the furniture, making it easy to clean.

2. Check Cleaning Instructions

Before you start cleaning the upholstery, make sure you check the cleaning instructions because different types of upholstery fabrics have different cleaning requirements. Check the following codes for your reference.

  • W: can clean with a water-based cleaner.
  • S: only use a dry cleaning solvent.
  • WS: can use a water-based cleaner or dry cleaner.
  • X: only vacuum the furniture, or use a professional cleaning.

3. Treat the Stains

Mix 1 cup of water with 1 tablespoon of mild dishwashing liquid and white vinegar each into a spray bottle. You can also use a suitable store-bought cleaner. Apply the cleaning solution on the stains, but don’t overwet the upholstery. Then gently blot the stained area using a microfiber cloth to remove the excess liquid and stain out of the fabric.

If the stain is old or stubborn, wait for a few minutes after applying the cleaning solution and gently rub the stain with a cloth before blotting it. Repeat this process until you get satisfactory results. Once done, spray water on the upholstery and blot the area to remove the soapy residue to prevent your furniture from staining.

4. Deep Clean the Upholstery

To deep clean your upholstery, you can use a portable steam cleaner. Fill the steam cleaner with water and a suitable cleaning solution as per the product guidelines and start cleaning the furniture. Use slow strokes to eliminate the deep-seated dirt and grime particles.

If you don’t have a steam cleaner, fill a bucket with cold water and add a small amount of mild laundry detergent or dish soap. Stir the solution to form bubbles. Then soak a clean microfiber cloth and wring it to remove excess water. Now start wiping the upholstery gently. Cover the entire area and repeat the step if necessary.

5. Let the Upholstery Air Dry

Once you are done cleaning the upholstery, let it completely dry. You can open the windows and turn on fans for quick drying. While your upholstery is drying, make sure it remains untouched until it is completely dry. Touching or using wet upholstery can make it dirty and stained.
